Why Childcare Cleaning Requires Specialist Standards

Children under 5 are significantly more susceptible to infectious illness than adults. Their immune systems are still developing, they frequently touch their faces, and they share objects and surfaces at close range throughout the day. A poorly cleaned childcare environment can become a rapid vector for gastroenteritis, hand-foot-and-mouth disease, and respiratory illnesses. The ACECQA National Quality Standard places specific obligations on childcare providers to maintain a clean, safe, and healthy environment - and cleaning contractors must meet those obligations.

Our childcare cleaning protocols are purpose-built for these environments. Every chemical is assessed for safety in environments with under-5 children. Every procedure accounts for where children sleep, eat, and play.

What Does Childcare Facility Cleaning Include?

  • Playroom and activity area cleaning - floors, shelving, tables, chairs, and learning materials sanitised daily
  • Nappy change areas and bathrooms - full disinfection of change tables, toilet seats, taps, and surrounding surfaces after every session
  • Sleep and rest rooms - cot and mat surfaces, bedding storage areas, and floors cleaned and disinfected
  • Kitchen and food preparation areas - AS 4674-compliant cleaning of benches, sinks, high chairs, and food service equipment
  • Toy and equipment sanitisation - periodic soaking and disinfection of shared toys, puzzles, and manipulative materials
  • Outdoor play areas - sandpit surrounds, soft-fall surfaces, outdoor furniture, and gate and handle disinfection
  • Hard floor maintenance - non-slip vinyl and tiles cleaned with child-safe neutral detergent and disinfectant
  • Staff areas, offices, and reception - standard commercial cleaning protocols
  • Illness outbreak response cleaning - intensive disinfection following gastroenteritis or other illness outbreaks

Products and Chemical Safety

Every cleaning product used in our childcare programs is assessed through our chemical risk evaluation framework against the following criteria: non-toxic to children at post-rinse contact levels, biodegradable where possible, fragrance-minimised (many childcare centres have children with allergies or sensitivities), and effective against the specific pathogens common in early childhood environments (norovirus, rotavirus, RSV).

We maintain a full Safety Data Sheet register for every product on site. Chemical storage is always in a dedicated locked area - never accessible to children. Auto-dosing dispensers are used where possible to eliminate the risk of incorrect concentration. Our ISO 14001 Environmental Management certification requires us to minimise chemical load and prioritise eco-certified alternatives.

We do not use aerosol sprays, bleach-based products without dilution controls, or any product not assessed against our childcare chemical framework.

Workforce Compliance for Childcare

Every staff member assigned to childcare facilities - without exception - holds a current Victorian Working with Children Check (WWCC) and a National Police Check. Beyond background checks, our childcare induction program covers child safeguarding awareness, appropriate conduct in proximity to children, and understanding of the centre's operational routines to ensure cleaning never conflicts with children's schedules or safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are your cleaning products safe for young children?
Yes - this is our primary requirement for childcare chemical selection. Every product is non-toxic to children at normal post-clean contact levels, assessed against our chemical risk framework, and listed in our SDS register. We use fragrance-minimised, biodegradable formulations where possible and avoid aerosols and bleach-based products in play areas. All chemicals are stored in locked areas inaccessible to children.
Do all staff have Working with Children Checks?
Yes, without exception. Every team member assigned to childcare facilities holds a current Victorian Working with Children Check and a National Police Check. These are verified before deployment and tracked for renewal. Our childcare induction program also covers child safeguarding awareness and appropriate conduct on site.
When do you clean - during or after centre hours?
The majority of our childcare cleaning occurs after children and staff have left the premises - typically from 6 pm onwards. Some centres also request a morning clean before opening. During centre hours, our staff do not clean in rooms where children are present. Spot cleaning of bathrooms or kitchens may occur between sessions if arranged with the centre director.
Can you handle illness outbreaks?
Yes. We provide emergency outbreak response cleaning for childcare centres experiencing gastroenteritis, hand-foot-and-mouth, or other illness outbreaks. This involves intensive terminal disinfection of all contact surfaces, floors, and shared equipment using virucidal products effective against the specific pathogens involved. We can typically mobilise a response team within 24 hours with prior notice.
Do you clean outdoor play equipment?
Yes. Outdoor play equipment, soft-fall surrounds, sandpit areas, and outdoor furniture are included in our childcare cleaning scope. High-touch surfaces such as climbing handles, slide rails, and gate latches are disinfected regularly. Sandpit hygiene (raking and covering) can also be included where required by the centre's management.
